TVSource: NCAA. Obviously, nothing is more intriguing in the early rounds than trying to pinpoint the potential upsets and shocking winners. Everybody loves a Cinderella story. So let's pick a few potential upsets. South Region. No. California. Lenny Ignelzi/Associated Press. On paper, California would be the easy pick. The Golden Bears are laden with talent, led by Jaylen Brown, Tyrone Wallace, Jordan Mathews, Ivan Rabb and Jabari Bird, all of whom average more than 1. But how will freshmen Brown and Rabb play in their first NCAA tournament (and for both, potentially their last)? And can Brown break out of a slump that has seen him score just 3. Finding his shot won't be easy against a good defensive team in Hawaii, which plays tenacious man- to- man defense. Stefan Jankovic and Roderick Bobbitt are a dangerous one- two punch, and the Rainbows play a fluid pick- and- roll offense that allows them to slash to the bucket and get easy baskets. A big aspect of the Rainbows' run to the NCAA tournament has been their mentality. But Hawaii has the talent to hang with California and the system to be effective in March. If the Golden Bears plays up to their talent, they'll win. Brown and Rabb will be the two best players on the court, by far. But Jankovic is a stud, and Hawaii's ability to play tough defense and secure easy buckets on the other end will make them one of the big upset winners in the second round. West Region. No. 1. Northern Iowa over No. Texas. Dilip Vishwanat/Getty Images. It's hard to love a Texas team that finished the season 4- 5 and lost its first Big 1. Baylor. Granted, those losses came to Oklahoma, Iowa State, Kansas and Baylor (twice), all very good teams. And yes, this is a Texas team that has beaten North Carolina, Iowa State, West Virginia (twice) and Baylor on the season. But the Longhorns are also facing a red- hot Northern Iowa team that has won six straight games and finished the season on a 1. Wichita State during that time. Oh, and Northern Iowa also has wins over Stephen F. Austin, North Carolina and Iowa State. Their resume is pretty impressive, too. The Panthers aren't terribly deep, but they have four players who score 1. Wes Washpun. They hold opponents to just 6. They also shoot well from beyond the arc (3. When you find a team that is playing excellent basketball and has already proved it can knock off the big boys, that's a Cinderella worth paying attention to in March. Northern Iowa is going to make the big boys in the West Region sweat. Midwest Region. No. Iowa State. Mike Groll/Associated Press. C. L. Brown of ESPN. Iona, noting, . The Gaels will attempt to spread them out on offense and both take and make a lot of 3- pointers and Iowa State isn't exactly known for its defense. They rank 1. 01st in defensive efficiency, per Ken. Pom. com, and finished the season a disappointing 5- 7. They also went 4- 8 away from home, a scary number as they embark on a tournament composed entirely of matchups in neutral locations. And as Pat Forde of Yahoo Sports wrote, . At times this has looked like Substitute Teacher Syndrome, with seniors who would rather do their own thing than listen to the new guy. English and company, meanwhile, won 1. They can flat- out score, meaning this game will likely be a shootout. And in shootouts, anything can happen. Iowa State has disappointed in the NCAA tournament in recent years. This game has all the makings of another Cyclones flop. You can follow Timothy Rapp on Twitter.
